The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is a flagship initiative by the Government of India launched in June 2015 with the ambitious goal of providing “Housing for All.”
This scheme aims to ensure that every eligible family across urban and rural areas of India has access to a pucca (all-weather) house equipped with basic amenities like a hygienic kitchen, water connection, toilet, and electricity. PMAY primarily focuses on providing affordable housing solutions to economically weaker sections (EWS), low-income groups (LIG), and middle-income groups (MIG) through various verticals and interest subsidies on home loans.
The PMAY scheme is broadly divided into two main components to cater to the distinct housing needs of different regions:
1. PMAY – Gramin (PMAY-G):
Provides pucca houses with basic amenities to eligible rural households.
2. PMAY – Urban (PMAY-U):
Addresses urban housing shortages through interest subsidies on home loans, slum redevelopment, affordable housing in partnership, and beneficiary-led construction.
